Hope has been rekindled for the families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza after Hamas announced on Saturday its agreement to release all captives, dead or alive. This pivotal decision is part of their conditional acceptance of a comprehensive peace plan brokered by President Donald Trump, which aims to end the ongoing war and see a full Israeli military withdrawal.
The announcement followed a dramatic ultimatum from Trump, who warned Hamas to accept the deal by Sunday evening or face unprecedented consequences. In its response, Hamas not only agreed to the hostage release but also declared its readiness to begin immediate negotiations through mediators to work out the finer points of the agreement, a move that could pave the way for an imminent ceasefire.
Furthermore, the Palestinian group has consented to a significant political transition in Gaza. Their statement affirmed their approval for handing over the administration of the Strip to a body of independent technocrats, formed with the backing of a Palestinian national consensus and regional allies. This provision is designed to depoliticize the governance of Gaza and facilitate its reconstruction.
Hamas did, however, express reservations about certain long-term aspects of the 20-point plan. The group noted that issues pertaining to the final status of the territory and the “legitimate rights of the Palestinian people” require broader consultation and are tied to existing international laws and resolutions. This indicates that while the immediate crisis may be nearing an end, the root causes of the conflict still need to be addressed.
In light of Hamas’s statement, Trump swiftly directed Israel to halt its bombing campaign to ensure the hostages could be safely rescued. His public declaration that he believes Hamas is “ready for a lasting PEACE” adds significant momentum to the process, effectively turning his peace proposal into the primary framework for ending the conflict and securing the return of all captives.
