Qatar commenced their 27th Arabian Gulf Cup journey with a decisive 2-0 win against Bahrain, the reigning champions, at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah on Thursday. This victory positions Qatar favorably in Group B, trailing only the United Arab Emirates, who secured a 4-0 triumph over Yemen earlier in the day.
The match’s breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Boualem Khoukhi capitalized on an expertly delivered free-kick from Akram Afif, heading the ball into the net to give Qatar the lead. Despite a setback in the 70th minute, when Ahmed Fathi was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, Qatar managed to hold their ground.
Following the dismissal, Bahrain intensified their efforts in search of an equalizer but were unable to penetrate Qatar’s defense. The match was ultimately secured for Qatar in the ninth minute of stoppage time, courtesy of a penalty conversion by Hassan Al Haydos. The penalty was awarded after Al Haydos was fouled inside the box, sealing Qatar’s victory.
This result places Qatar in a strong position as they prepare to face Yemen in their next group match. Meanwhile, Bahrain will aim to rebound when they meet the United Arab Emirates.
