In a significant diplomatic development, Qatar and France have agreed to enhance their strategic partnership, focusing on defense, security, trade, energy, and investment. This commitment follows the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Doha on October 20–21, 2026, where he engaged in comprehensive discussions with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The talks between the two leaders underscored the importance of bolstering bilateral cooperation and strengthening political and diplomatic coordination. A key area of focus was defense cooperation, with both nations agreeing to expand military collaboration. This includes joint training, enhancing land-force capabilities, and improving air defense systems. A letter of intent was signed to involve KNDS France and John Cockerill Defense in modernizing Qatar’s land forces. Additionally, there is mutual interest in advancing cooperation on Rafale fighter aircraft, radar systems, communications satellites, and military planning.
Security measures were also a priority, as Qatar and France committed to enhancing counterterrorism efforts and cybersecurity collaboration, as well as combatting illicit financial flows. The protection of maritime navigation and the reduction of regional tensions through diplomatic means were emphasized as critical goals.
On the economic front, the two countries plan to explore joint investment opportunities in various sectors, including energy, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity, transport, infrastructure, healthcare, and tourism. Both sides highlighted the importance of energy security, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
Regional conflicts were a significant part of the discussions, with attention given to the situations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. The two leaders reaffirmed their support for diplomatic resolutions, humanitarian assistance, and efforts toward regional stability. They also reiterated their backing for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Beyond defense and economic matters, Qatar and France are committed to expanding cooperation in education, research, culture, sports, and tourism. They also plan to undertake joint humanitarian and development initiatives, reflecting their dedication to strengthening their strategic relationship and working together on global security and economic growth.
