Qatar recently took part in a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting in Bahrain, where the focus was on enhancing regional collaboration in social welfare, family support, and community development. The event brought together ministers of social affairs and social development from GCC member states, aiming to improve coordination, share expertise, and develop joint initiatives to tackle social challenges in the region.
Represented by Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Qatar engaged in discussions that reviewed the implementation of existing Gulf-wide decisions and the committee’s work plan for 2026-2030. A key aspect of the meeting was the exploration of strategies to improve social programs to meet the evolving needs of communities across the GCC.
Among the prominent topics were disability rights, including the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The ministers discussed the possibility of establishing a regular Gulf forum focused on disability-related issues. Additionally, the impact of artificial intelligence on children’s rights was a significant point of discussion, as were the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies.
The meeting also addressed plans for a regional report on children’s rights and their future within GCC countries. Strengthening cooperation on women’s issues and considering new initiatives to advance social development in the Gulf region were other key areas of focus. Further coordination on childhood protection and welfare was also on the agenda.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Al Nuaimi attended a ceremony recognizing notable individuals and projects in civil social work. Several Qatari figures and initiatives were honored for their significant contributions, highlighting Qatar’s active role in regional social development efforts.
