As Southeast Asia continues to assert itself as a global economic powerhouse, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is deepening its economic ties with Qatar, a collaboration that has seen annual bilateral trade nearly reach $15 billion. This burgeoning partnership is opening doors across vital sectors such as energy, aviation, healthcare, and digital technology, signaling a significant expansion in economic cooperation.
Qatar’s relationship with ASEAN took a formal step forward when it became an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 2026, building upon its earlier accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2022. This strategic partnership is now fostering enhanced cooperation in diverse fields, including energy, investment, and sustainable development, supported by a series of high-level exchanges.
With ASEAN’s sizable market, encompassing over 680 million people and an economy valued at approximately $3.9 trillion, Qatar sees a wealth of opportunities for collaboration. Both parties are keen to explore ventures in renewable energy, green technology, and sustainable infrastructure, aiming to leverage each other’s strengths in these critical areas.
The ASEAN Committee in Doha is actively promoting stronger business ties and cultural exchanges between ASEAN member states and Qatar. Their efforts are focused on encouraging practical cooperation, enhancing connectivity, and facilitating people-to-people interactions, further solidifying the relationship.
