On Sunday, the city of Manama in Bahrain hosted important discussions as Qatar joined the 89th Gulf Health Council meeting and the 12th GCC Health Ministers’ Committee gathering. Leading the Qatari delegation was the Minister of Public Health, Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud. These meetings were pivotal in enhancing collaborative efforts among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries within the health sector.
The discussions centered around the review of the Gulf Health Council’s budget for 2027, as well as the initiatives and strategic plans set for 2026–2030. One of the key areas of focus was the examination of strategic decisions concerning the storage of essential commodities such as food and medicines, alongside measures for conducting health examinations for expatriate workers.
The health ministers also deliberated on the Gulf Strategy for Combating Drugs, which is set to be implemented from 2025 to 2028. This strategy aims to strengthen the region’s capacity to address drug-related challenges effectively. In addition, plans to establish a Gulf Centre for Food Risk Assessment were discussed, demonstrating a proactive approach to ensuring food safety and public health in the region.
Progress on decisions made during the previous GCC Health Ministers’ Committee meeting was another significant agenda item. Reviewing these outcomes allowed the officials to assess the effectiveness of past resolutions and strategize for further improvements in regional health cooperation.
